Winter Ale by Smuttynose
6pk for $10.97
Beer Style: The Belgian Dubbel is rich, malty beer with some spicy/phenolic and mild alcoholic characteristics. Not as much fruitiness as the Belgian Strong Dark Ale but some dark fruit aromas and flavors may be present. Mild hop bitterness with no lingering hop flavors. It may show traits of a steely caramel flavor from the use of crystal malt or dark candy sugar. Look for a medium to full body with an expressive carbonation.
Appearance: Dark amber in color with nearly a 1” inch head. Nice lacing with a creamy head appearance
Smell: Malt, spices, hazelnut? Coffee?
Taste: Lots of sweet malt with some spices on the finish. I pick up cardamom and dark fruits
Mouth-feel: Medium body, with a somewhat dry finish
Overall: Without looking up the style, this beer tastes like a spiced Scottish Ale with lots of malt with spices. I am not a fan of the dry finish on this beer. I would have liked a creamy finish. It has good flavor, but doesn’t set it apart from any other winter ale. If you like spiced ales and Scottish ales this beer is worth a try. After checking the style of this beer, I was quite surprised. It really doesn’t resemble Dubbel in my opinion.
Cheers,
