Beer Style: IPA (or India Pale Ale) is a beer that focuses on bitterness and hop profile. Originally made with extra hops to withstand long sailing trips, they have evolved into a “cult” beer style in the USA, with many breweries producing them.
Appearance: Golden, slightly orange-ish yellow, some haze with 1.5 inch head and perfect lacing.
Aroma: Tropical explosion. Grapefruit heavy.
Taste: Tropical fruits, white grapefruit, some spice on end. Some bitter lemon as well, alcohol hidden well.
Mouth-feel: Full-bodied IPA mouthfeel with a dry finish.
Overall: This is Stone’s foray into the “Session” IPA category. Session IPA’s have lower alcohol than your normal IPA. As expected, this beer delivers! (Stone is known for their over-the-top brews.)
For a session ale, this is well done—it is a bitter tropical fruit bomb! Stone is using a different technique to extract more hop flavor for this beer, and it clearly works well!
I’m not sure if I’ve ever had a brew that had such high expectations, and delivered so well! This beer is a new addition to the Stone lineup and a “must-try.”
